The Importance of Working On Your Lash Business

Lash Tip: Get active on Social Media, build a brand, and let your ideal clients know you exist!

It’s all good and well to be a highly-skilled Lash Stylist, but if nobody knows... how will you ever succeed? How will you ever run a profitable business? 

As a Lash Stylist, you need to not only know how to expertly apply Eyelash Extensions but just as importantly, you need to know how to create the desire for people to want your Eyelash Extensions.

In this day and age, that means being active on social media. Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter, and wherever your ideal client is likely to be spending time online.

Many experienced stylists do not pay enough attention here and it ends up costing them a lot of business to their competitors who may not necessarily offer a better-quality service, but they are better at marketing and as a result, will pick up more clients.

Try to understand that the lashes you apply for your clients are simply what you get paid on but creating the desire for your lashes in the first place is where you need to focus much of your time and creative effort.

In reality, you must strive to become an expert at both if you are to become truly successful.

Just as important is knowing who your ideal client is (because I can assure it's not everybody) and then learning how to communicate effectively to that one type of client.

Think about any good brand (cheap through to luxury, K-Mart to Chanel, etc) and I can assure you the one thing they all have in common is they know exactly who their ideal customer is, and every part of their marketing is tailored to appeal to that type of customer, not all customers.

As a guide, before you post anything online you should first be asking yourself if your ideal client will:

  1. Like this?
  2. Find this funny?
  3. Find this valuable or useful?
  4. Be inspired by this?

If not, maybe re-think whether or not it's worth posting.


Set up a website, be active on Facebook / Instagram, and other in trend social platforms where your ideal clients spend time, add value to relevant forum discussions, identify who your ideal clients are (and aren't) and how you can attract the right clients to your business.

Learn how to take good photos of your lash work, network, and cross-promote with other beauty therapists and related businesses. Up-skill, research, and draw inspiration from other influential people within the industry.

These are merely the tip of the iceberg as to what you could and should be doing to start building a successful business and personal brand. 

I personally spend more time working “on” my business than working “in” my business and I truly believe this is crucial to my success.

Whilst you may not be directly paid for the hours you spend working on your business, these hours will often earn you much more income and success in the long run.

Lash Retention

Once you start attracting your ideal clients you need to know how to nurture that relationship and continually deliver what it is that they are looking for, so they become raving and loyal fans!

Many of my own personal clients have been with me from the very beginning when I was doing mobile lashes and would apply their lashes while they laid on the edge of their couch!
