Book an Eye Test
Just a heads up - before you dive into the world of lashes and brows, it's a good idea to get your eyes checked by an optometrist and mention that you'll be working up close (30 cm) for up to two hours per appointment.
Even if you're confident in your eyesight, it's worth double-checking – as from our experience, we find most Lash & Brow Artists need glasses without realising it.
We also recommend having these checks every 6-12 months.
For those who live in Brisbane, we recommend the Eyeman at Newstead.
Set Up Your Home Salon
If you're fresh to the industry and haven't got your home salon ready yet, don't worry, we've got some tips for you.
Plus, we're always here to lend a helping hand, so feel free to drop us an email for advice on other items you're considering.
Massage Beds: Look for something with adjustable height (not fixed) up to at least 80cm high, and one that allows your legs to slip comfortably underneath. See this example of what we use at LashJoy Academy that works very well.
Avoid massage beds like this example that don't allow you to slide your knees under the bed. Or beds like this example that have the corners cut off as you won't have anywhere to rest your elbows during the application.
Chairs: Make sure you choose a comfortable chair or stool with adjustable height, this will assist with ensuring you maintain correct posture. See some examples here.
Lash Station: This is where you will keep all of your lash supplies and tools needed during each appointment. Our personal favourite is this 3 Drawer Filing Cabinet from Officeworks.
Lighting: Good lighting doesn't just help you see clearly; it reduces eye strain, improves efficiency and makes your photos and videos look amazing! Aim for LED lighting (as this gives off no heat) and a light with adjustable brightness. View our lighting collection.
Organising Your Training Models
All models must be over 18. If you're arranging your own models, be sure to stress how important it is for them to turn up! To keep them committed, it's a clever idea to set up a small, refundable $30 holding deposit. Make it clear, if they cancel without giving you at least 24 hours' notice, they'll lose their deposit.
Try to pick models who photograph well and have great natural lashes/brows. Remember, photos taken during training can be brilliant for promoting your business on social media!
We'll be in touch via email to double-check your model needs before your course starts. If you're finding it a bit tricky to get your own models, don’t stress, we can help out - Just let us know at least 1 week prior to your course, and we'll provide them for you at a fee of $35 per model.
